Elma Kennard

Frank B. Kennard and Sadie Kennedy had three children:

Eveleen Montana Kennard                     b. 6 August 1892, Manchester, Delaware, Iowa
Elma Kennard                                        b. circa December 1897, Kinsey, Custer, Montana
Paul Kennedy Kennard                          b. 22 July 1900, Kinsey, Custer, Montana

There is a birth record for Eveleen from Iowa. However, Montana did not require the keeping of vital records until 1907 at the earliest. For Paul, I found a newspaper announcement in the Helena Independent on 3 Aug 1900. But, for Elma, the only birth record is the back of this photo. There may be a newspaper announcement as well but the previous information that I had was born in 1897. And 12 months of searching in even a small newspaper is quite a task.

Elma is not a family name for either the Kennards or Kennedys. It is my belief that Elma Kennard was named after a friend, Elma Dora Holbert nee Baker, an animal painter. 

Sadly, Elma and Paul each died before they reached the age of 2 years. They are buried next to their father in Custer County Cemetery, Miles City, Montana.

Photo most likely taken in 1931 after the burial of Dan C. Mackey. F. B. Kennard's gravestone is behind Dan's. These men were the husbands of Sarah (Sadie) Ellen Kennedy. Ironically, they were born 10 days apart. Sadie is buried next to Dan. Frank's children who died young, Elma and Paul, are buried next to Frank.

Unknown Woman

It is not known who this woman is or the man in the photo on the table. It is believed that this photo originally belonged to Sadie (Sarah) Kennedy Kennard MacKay. She does not appear to be a Kennedy sister.  She remains a mystery. There is nothing on the front or the back of the photo. The cardboard is 7" x 9".

This photo is a group of unknown women except for Sadie (Sarah) Kennedy Kennard MacKay. She is on the right end in the second row. The photo was probably either taken in Miles City, Montana or in Brookings, South Dakota. The building may be a church because there are stain glass windows. Sadie was a Presbyterian. Leave a comment if you can identify anyone or the location of the photo. The photo may have been taken circa 1930.
